Aries, thank you for joining me here at Books Like Breathing! This is my first character interview and I’m so excited to get to talk to you.
Thank you for having me. I’ve had so much happen in the last few months, it will be good to talk about it in the open! Many people have probably judged me for my actions, and I want to put the truth out there for those who wish to see it. If only you could send this to the crew of the New Dawn.
Let’s start with the beginning of your tale. Describe a day in your life on the New Dawn.
I worked as an engineer in the life support systems. Although I’d always wanted to be a biologist, the computer chose this job for me based on test scores. I may have been good at math, but working on the life support systems was boring and tedious for me. The computer never factored in what I wanted to do.
Same with my lifemate. After learning I was matched to a prominent lieutenant, I felt like my entire life was under scrutiny. All he did was want to control me, right down to how I wore my hair. I didn’t even like him, never mind love him. They wanted me to think I was lucky, when I felt like the most unlucky girl on the New Dawn. Except for my friend, Tria, of course. Her lifemate assignment was much worse, but I won’t get into that now. Rest in peace, Tria.
Why was it so important for you leave the New Dawn?
I needed to take control of my life and my destiny. Everything is not predetermined, as they make you believe on the New Dawn. You do have a choice. Take charge of your life and make it your own.
What were your initial thought/fears when you decided to escape?
I didn’t care whether I lived or died. I just wanted to get away from that ship. I feared they’d catch me and bring me back. And that’s exactly what they did.
Was life on the New Dawn as cold and lifeless as it read in the book? Were there any happy moments?
Oh yes, Tria and I had many great times. We used to sneak away and hide in the biodome. We’d talk about what life was like back on old Earth before the destruction. If Tria had stayed on the New Dawn, I just might have stayed and stuck it out with her. It was only after she escaped that I wanted to as well.
In one sentence, what were your first impressions of Striker?
Hot and dangerous. That’s all I have to say about that.
If you could exact your revenge on Barliss, what exactly would you do to him?
I’d make him understand that the only life he should control is his own. That forcing people to do things only ends in sadness. He needs to give the others on the New Dawn a choice in the matters of their life.
If you had to make a choice between two very terrible options, would you rather have been one of the last remaining people on Earth or married to Barliss?
That’s easy: I’d rather live on Earth. I’ve always wanted to see what it was like, even if I had to witness the destruction. At least I’d have a chance to see oceans, real skyscrapers, and maybe even some animals, even if they were long dead and stuffed.
Thanks again for joining me, Aries! This has been a real treat!
Thank you for having me. Make sure you always have the courage to be true to yourself, and follow what you want to do, not succumb to the expectations of others.
